A dog training collar is a safe and effective way to train your dog when used
properly. There are a few basic, common sense
rules to remember when using a dog training collar.1)
Always train at the lowest correction level possible.
Remember, it is a shock collar. If you can get the
desired behavior from your dog on level one then stick
to level one. You may need to use a higher level
than you would normally use occasionally, but for the
most part you should be on a lower level.
2) Train to not correct. The goal should always
be to have your dog obey your voice command. Once
your dog becomes familiar with the correction, they will
generally obey for two reasons. To get your
approval and any reward associated with it and to avoid
the correction.
3) Always reward good behavior. You want your
dog to behave because they want to behave. The
best way to ensure this is to reward good behavior.
When your dog does what you want, play with them or give
them a treat. It's better to have your dog obeying
because they want to than it is to have them obey
because they don't want to be punished.
4) Be consistent. In many ways, a dog is like a
child. They crave love and attention, love to play
and will misbehave on occasion. Just like a child,
if you are inconsistent in your discipline they will
become confused about right and wrong. This can
cause them to act out. Your dog wants to be loved
and will return the favor.
My experience is that when this type of training
isn't effective it's because the owner is the one that
should be wearing the shock collar. Don't put the
collar on and just start shocking the dog. Be
responsible, know your training method and give your dog
the love he or she deserves and you'll be more than
satisfied with your dog training collar.
