Bark Collars

Bark Collars are designed to control a dog's barking or to eliminate nuisance barking. There are several bark collars on the market, so its easy to get confused when choosing a bark collar. There are three main types; shock collars, spray collars and ultra-sonic bark control devises.

Shock Bark Collars

This is your basic shock collar. There are three probes on the receiver; one to detect barking and two to deliver correction. The majority of these collars will detect a dog's barking by sensing the vibration in their vocal cords caused by barking. A very few deliver a warning tone prior to delivering a correction. Many of these collars have progressive correction. This is where the level of correction increases if the dog continues to bark. Others are user set. In this type of collar, the user sets the collar at the lowest level and then lets the dog go about its normal business for 30 to 60 minutes. If this level fixes the dog's barking then the collar is left at this level. If it doesn't correct the barking, then the level is raised on and the process is repeated until the barking is corrected. Shock Bark Collars are the most effective form of bark control.

Spray Bark Collars

A Spray Bark Collar also senses the vibration in the dog's vocal cords associated with barking. When the dog barks, a citrus spray is delivered to the dog's snout rather than the dog being shocked. This type of collar is effective on docile dogs.

Ultra-sonic Bark Control Devises

Ultra-sonic Bark Control devises have a microphone inside them that detects the constant barking sound of the dog. They then emit a high pitched sound in bursts that can only be picked up by animals. The dog will be startled by the pitch and stop barking. Eventually, the dog will learn to associate the unpleasant pitch with barking. There are a couple of different types. One is worn on the collar and is activated solely by the dogs barking. The other is a table top or hand held devise. It can be activated either by the dog's barking or manually. They can be worn on a collar are a couple of disadvantages to these devises. Most of these devises have a limited range (generally 20 - 25 feet). Also, they can be heard by your other dog or cat.

When used properly, any bark control devise can be very effective at deterring unwanted barking.
